The meaning of Hawes is a 'pass between mountains' and it stands between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss making it an excellent centre for walking and touring. The nearby Dales of Swaledale, Dentdale, Garsdale and Wharfedale offer some magnificent scenery with the Pennine Way running right through the town. Leave the car behind and stroll to the craft and speciality shops enjoy the local attractions, and the many tea rooms and restaurants in Hawes

Close to the cottage visitors can stand on the bridge in the centre of Hawes and watch the Ure tumble over the waterfall.

Hawes also has a thriving cheese-making industry - much loved by Wallace and Grommit. As the only makers of Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese in the world this is fantastic day out at the wensleydale Dairy visitors centre. Check in the cottage for special offer tickets for this attraction.

W R Outhwaite & Son, Ropemakers was established in 1905 and manufactures barrier ropes, bannister ropes, church bell ropes, dog leads, skipping ropes, clothes line, equestrian ropes and candlewicks. Come and watch traditional ropemaking in progress and enjoy the facilities on offer, including a well-stocked shop full of gift ideas.
